The land brings together all of Bali’s classic elements – a rice field plateau with views of the ocean and the neighboring island of Nusa Penida, plunges abruptly into a river valley punctuated by thick stands of trees, flora and rocks sculpted by the flow of water. Looking inland, the eye is drawn by serried ranks of jungle clad hills and stepped rice paddies.

The Medspa sanctuary seems to emerge organically from one side of a lush, steeply graded valley, descending over four levels to a meandering river below. Hanging gardens are perfectly married to the landscape, blending with the jungle flora and narrowing the boundary between built spaces and the natural world. Secreted in this idyllic setting, and utilizing materials like stone, glass, slate with abundant water features, The Legacy Medspa is a facility devoted to every aspects of wellbeing - physical, mental and spiritual. THE SUNGAI VILLAS + SPA BALI

The Sungai is a high concept, exclusive villa development that combining an organic architectural approach with an ultra modern design aesthetic and high tech facilities, The Sungai will comprise eight fully serviced residences of one, two and three bedrooms surrounding a central spa facility, restaurant, bar, lounge and executive meeting area equipped with all corporate facilities.

THE SETTING

The Sungai is located in the serene and undulating coastal plains of Pererenan, Canggu just 5 minutes from pristine beaches and thundering pacific surf, including one of the best surf breaks on the island overlooked by the tranquil Echo Beach Café. You are 10 minutes from The Nirwana golf course (designed by none other than golfing legend Greg Norman) and the cliff top temple of Tanah Lot, while the sleek bars and restaurants of style-setting Seminyak can be reached in 15 minutes and the international airport in 30 minutes.

The River.

Water in motion. An unbroken flow winding through a changing landscape, reflecting the shifting light of day and night and half-light. Its voice made up of countless smaller sounds, creating a beguiling rhythm. Deep currents that might easily carry you far, far away adrift on forgotten impulses…

The Mosaic.
Distinct elements harmoniously woven together. A blend of colours, shapes and patterns drifting one into the other. A whole that is greater than the sum of its parts…
The Sungai.
The river; the mosaic; nature’s elements. The Sungai is inspired by all of these, bringing each into play through imagination and a deep reverence for the land from which it emerges. Just as the river flows, so do The Sungai’s discrete architectural elements merge with one another. Echoing the stepped rice paddies that surround it, The Sungai is built on multiple levels. Its villas, each unique, each complementary, curve sinuously inward, with their neighbours creating a carefully integrated tapestry and a symmetry that lies just beyond your reach… nature’s mosaic.

As soon as you approach The Sungai, you realise you are not just entering a physical space, but a carefully created ambience which begins with the specially commissioned mosaic decorating the outer wall facing The Sungai’s private road. Glass is ingeniously used throughout the property, offering unobstructed views of tranquil ponds reflecting the play of light through the day and roof gardens planted with iridescent grasses that ripple and murmur under the light coastal breezes. Commissioned art works – carefully selected sculptures and contemporary paintings –adorn both public and private spaces. The Sungai’s villas are accessed from a circular walkway built around the the spa/restaurant/meeting complex. As soon as you leave this public sphere, you step into an entirely private and unique space – your component part of the mosaic…

The Sungai achieve SCHOTT Design Award for architectural Glass 2006

BANJAR GERENCENG DENPASAR

Artistry inherited from his family makes this man, whose complete name is: Anak Agung Yoka Sara, profoundly fall in love with the art domain, particularly architecture. Many of his intellectual works are not only favoured by the local community, but also people from outside Bali. Even, he once achieved the BCI Asia & Schott Design Award for architecture with glass on a glass creation used in his design at The Sungai Villas & Spa at Prerenan, Bali.

Ultimately, one of his thinking, probably the only one in Bali, is visualized at his home hamlet, Gerenceng, Denpasar. "As a matter of fact, in every single work of mine, I depart from a concept, namely harmonization. Harmony in each of those works is based on the tenet of Hinduism namely the Tri Hita Karana (harmonious relationship amongst the God, human and nature)," reveals the man born in 1965.

Though inspired by intense philosophy of the Balinese people, his architectural works more emphasizes on intermix of traditional and modern architectural styles. "I put more significance on the concept of Tri Hita Karana in terms of its building philosophy and not merely on its architecture," he utters.

"On this work, I put emphasis on the combination of traditional and modern architecture. So, on the leading building of Gerenceng hamlet lies a holy sanctum, northern pavilion and rice granary that almost entering the age of 100 years are not changed deliberately. We just made some restorations on several damaged sections. This reflects that we stay to preserve the works of our predecessors," he affirms.

Also added, in his current work, he would like to combine the works of previous generation with that of the current ones. It’s so important that young generation can not only see the works of modern architecture but also observe the works of their predecessors. (BTN/rai)

CASABRINA MALAYSIA

Casabrina brings together 11 exclusive residences of three and four bedrooms, each unique, each carefully designed to harmonise with its natural surroundings.

Casabrina began six years ago with Yoka Sara spending days simply walking among the hills, usually at dawn and dusk, so that his designs would fit with the environment. The different location, views, gradients, wind direction, height and orientation of each site means that each villa is a unique and beautiful creation, a work of art that comes both from nature and the architect’s inspired ideas.

More than static structures, Yoka Sara’s creations in Casabrina take visitors through a sequence of distinct and complementary stages that reveal each villa’s special characteristics. These steps are designed to excite different emotions: an initial Reception area is followed by a brief journey which culminates in a Discovery point – the first tangible impression of the villa. Excitement follows, in the revelation of the main living area and the vista it enjoys, then Relaxation is embodied in facilities like the horizon pool, deck and lounges all framed by breathtaking scenery. Finally there is Rest in the sleeping compounds, all built to bring you closer to nature. For more detail information visit www.casabrina.net
